Sylvester Cully Union

OCTOBER 15, 1944 - APRIL 3, 2026

The world was a kinder, more welcoming place in the presence of Sylvester “Cully” Union Jr., who passed away at the age of 81. Born in Omaha and shaped by the strength and spirit of the community that raised him, Cully learned early the enduring value of a warm greeting, a firm handshake, and the belief that no one was ever truly a stranger.

A graduate of Tech High School, he went on to serve his country in the United States Army, where he discovered a lifelong love of travel. His time exploring Europe left a lasting imprint, broadening his perspective and deepening his appreciation for the people and places that make the world so richly diverse. Upon returning home, he began a long and dedicated career with AT&T, eventually settling in Pleasanton, California, where he raised his three daughters — Kelly, Gabrielle “Nickie,” and Tracy — with quiet strength, unwavering support, and a generous heart.

In retirement, Cully made his home in Mesa, Arizona, though he was never one to remain idle for long.

He found renewed purpose as a school bus driver for Mesa Public Schools, embracing a role that allowed him to remain close to his grandchildren and woven into the everyday rhythms of family life he so deeply cherished.

Cully found joy in many things — lively conversation, new adventures, and cheering on his beloved Nebraska Cornhuskers — yet nothing meant more to him than the people in his life. He had a remarkable gift for forming genuine connections, leaving lasting impressions wherever he went, and holding his family as the cornerstone of his world.

He is lovingly remembered by his three daughters; his sisters, Helen Hudgins and Phyllis Smith; his brother- in-law, William Hudgins; his cherished grandchildren and great-grandchildren; and a wide circle of nieces, nephews, neighbors, colleagues, and dear friends who were, to him, an extension of family.
